Antique Book, Added Upon - A Story, copyright 1912, 10th Edition, by Nephi Anderson, Mormon/LDS Fiction, 228 pages, in Excellent Used Condition (EUC) + Ephemera - $60
Christian Nephi Anderson (January 22, 1865 – January 6, 1923) was a prominent Utah novelist and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).
The book is in outstanding condition for one that's well over 100 years old. There are scuffs and other marks on the covers which, along with the spine, is faded in some places.
The corners of the boards are bumped, there is some shelf wear, and a previous owner wrote their name in ink on the front flyleaf. There is browning/tanning throughout the book.
However, the binding is solid and tight, there are no loose or missing pages and no other marks were observed on any pages.
Added Upon is the first and most popular novel written by Nephi Anderson. Originally published in 1898 by Deseret News Publishing Company and significantly enlarged and expanded in its fifth edition (1912), the book has never been out of print.
The story concerns several spirit children of God who move from the pre-existence, to mortal life, to their eternal reward, interacting with each other at each step.
The novel influenced many subsequent Mormon works of literature, notably Saturday's Warrior.
A prolific writer of the "Home Literature" period of LDS fiction, Anderson published ten novels as well as short stories, poetry, essays, and a history of the Church for young people.
Ephemera included with the book is an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper which appears to be a typed carbon copy of a letter titled "A Blessing Given By Joseph B. Keeler, Patriarch, Upon The Head of Clifford Emanuel Christensen, Son Of Thomas Cleveland Christensen, And Nellie Vohland, Born February 1, 1914, In North Platte, Nebraska."
A notation at the bottom of the page says, "Provo, Utah, August 30, 1931.....signed Joseph B. Keeler."
Joseph Brigham Keeler (September 8, 1855 – December 21, 1935) was an American teacher and administrator at Brigham Young Academy (BYA) and then Brigham Young University (BYU).
Keeler was one of the original students at the BYA when it opened in 1875. He graduated from BYA in 1880 and then became editor of the Provo Enquirer. Keeler was the main person behind the establishment of the first BYA boarding house. In 1888 he was described as being the First Counselor to Karl G. Maeser.
Keeler remained on the faculty of BYU until his retirement May 1920. He was dean of BYU's business college from 1904 to 1920. In 1921 Keeler was ordained a patriarch for the Utah Stake by James E. Talmage.
