Sartre's work has been hailed as "The principal text of modern existentialism," and is considered to be a foundational text that explores human consciousness, freedom, and responsibility.
Sartre argues that humans create their own meaning through radical choice, a concept he called "existence preceded essence." Being and Nothingness is viewed as a cornerstone of 20th-century existentialism, having a profound influence on philosophy, literature and culture.
