5 Vintage 1960s Ken Edwards El Palomar 6 Inch Ceramic Cereal Bowls in Excellent Used Condition (EUC)
Each bowl is about 6 inches across the top, 2.5 inches tall and weighs approx 1 lb 1 oz +/- 1 oz. The colors on one bowl have faded and two have hairline cracks (or glaze cracks - it's hard to tell). See pics.
All of the bowls are sturdy and solid (even with the hairline cracks) with no chips or other issues. Each piece is signed with KE, El Palomar or Chapalita, Mexico, and the artist's cipher.
Ken Edwards (1926 - 2022) produced high quality ceramic items after emigrating to Tonala, Mexico (within the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area in the state of Jalisco) in the 1960s. He installed the first high-temperature kiln in Mexico and he adopted the Tonala style of decorating ceramic pieces.
In his later years he moved to San Antonio Palopó, Guatemala to continue his ceramic work. In an interview, Edwards stated the move to Guatemala was because he and his wife "...wanted to have another adventure, we were both master potters, and I am an adventurer!" (https://www.etnicatravel.com/)
As it turned out, Edwards and his wife also helped to address the local lack of employment and educational opportunities for young people. "So when he moved to San Antonio Palopó he noticed most young men didn’t have a job...He introduced change while respecting their traditions, by doing it their way, respecting their heritage...He found out they had incredible learning abilities...today the ceramics of San Antonio Palopó, Lake Atitlán, is recognized worldwide thanks to him and his teachings and benefits many local families."
